An old French aphorism has it,"Put your foot on the peddle of revolution and you put yourself on the path to self- destruction".

Marx could see in the Continental wars,a war "that bled France dry" a war to extend the Revolution of 1789. Though sympathetic to the cause of liberty-see his Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon,the Class Struggles in France,The Civil War in France -he realised that that France's expansionary plans  were a war of self-aggrandisement.
